JOHN DAY – The Eastern Oregon Regional Educator Network has worked with several of our local Grant County Schools in securing staff and teacher housing. The REN is a board of 25 people, mostly educators from Grant, Lake, Harney, Malheur, and Wallowa counties.

Jennifer Martin, Network Coordinator, said the main goal of the REN is to address the needs of rural schools and rural students. She mentioned a good piece of their work includes educator recruitment:

“We’ve been trying to do quite a bit of that work in Grant County, specifically. One of the major barriers we identified early was the lack of housing for educators in school districts. We have wonderful teachers here. We don’t actually have huge issues with retention. We have a terrible time once we lose our great teachers [with] replacing them.”

Schools in Monument, Dayville, Long Creek and Prairie City have all recently benefited from the Eastern Oregon Regional Educators Network.
