La Grande – Multiple agencies collaborated in a training on Monday and Tuesday, June 27th and 28th. The training focused on preparation of the so-called Cascadia Earthquake.
According to a previously published release, those involved included:
“several key local volunteer groups and agencies. Volunteer groups include the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, American Red Cross, and members from Union County Search and Rescue. Agency involvement includes the City of La Grande Fire, Police, Public Works, and Wastewater Treatment; La Grande Rural Fire District; Center for Human Development/Union County Public Health; Grande Ronde Hospital; Avista Utilities, Oregon Trail Electric Cooperation, and Ziply Fiber; Union County Commissioners, 911 Dispatch, Emergency Services, Public Works, and the Sheriff’s Department; Oregon Department of Emergency Management, Oregon Department of Transportation and the Federal Emergency Management Association. ”
Following up on the training, Union County Emergency Services posted:
“Condensed into a two-day exercise, many local emergency responder agencies tested their capabilities by participating in a simulated Cascadia earthquake response effort. The exercise simulated an assortment of issues ranging from landslides, power outages, gas leaks, cracked bridges, civil unrest, building assessments, broken water mains, road closures, debris removal, utilizing radio communications, and sheltering needs among many others.
Bringing these groups together through exercise assists in improving inter-agency communications, shared resources, and cooperation in achieving a common goal of protecting life safety of citizens and visitors to Union County. The exercise also identifies areas of improvement which can be obtained through additional practice and training.
Union County would like to issue a special thank you to all who participated!”
