Pendleton police warn businesses of counterfeit money circulating

PENDLETON – The Pendleton Police Department is issuing an alert to local businesses to be on the lookout for fraudulent money being passed at local establishments, particularly $100 bills.
Police are encouraging everyone to be vigilant and to diligently examine the money they receive for authenticity.
When it comes to spotting counterfeit money, remember the FEEL test! Genuine U.S. currency has a unique texture, printed on a blend of cotton and linen fibers, not ordinary paper. Run your fingers over Franklin’s shoulder on the new $100 bills—genuine ones feature raised printing, giving a distinct texture. When in doubt, compare it to another bill for authenticity!
Pendleton PD asks that if employees encounter a situation involving counterfeit currency, please follow the store’s protocols and contact law enforcement by calling its 24-hour dispatch center at 541-966-3651.

There has been a recent rash of reported cases of counterfeit bills in Northeast Oregon. Union County Sheriff’s Office also reported a string of counterfeit $100s, as did the Baker City Police Department.
