UNION COUNTY — Law enforcement agencies in Northeast Oregon are warning about a rise in counterfeit $100 bills being used at local businesses.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says one of its deputies recently took a call about some very believable counterfeit bills.  The Sheriff’s Office says the employee at the business said the money passed the marker test, the black light test and by all accounts looks genuine.

However, there is no watermark on the bills and that’s what tipped officials off that the bill was fake.

The Sheriff’s Office says the business, which hasn’t been named,  took approximately $3,000 in fake bills.

The Baker City Police Department says it has also recently responded to one business that reported fake $100 bills trying to be used and that a second business may have also allegedly been scammed by fake bills. Baker Police say they are still investigating.

Law enforcement is urging everyone to be careful and aware of counterfeits.
