SALEM – The Oregon Psychiatric Security Review Board has decided that convicted killer Thaddeus Ziemlak cannot be adequately controlled and treated outside of the Oregon State Hospital at this time. The board held its hearing last month, and announced its decision earlier this month.

Ziemlak has escaped mental health supervision custody at least twice. In 2020 he ran when he was on an unsupervised outing in Pendleton. While state and federal authorities were searching for the escapee, the Pendleton Police Department located him in California and returned him to Salem. He escaped once again in 2022 while on an outing in Lane County but was quickly recaptured.

Every two years, the board is required to review the status of those who are being held for their actions. This time the board ruled that he cannot be adequately controlled and treated in a community setting.

Ziemlak was institutionalized for the shooting death of his mother in Eugene in 2004.
