WALLA WALLA – September is Suicide Prevention Month and Walla Walla Public Schools will be promoting an awareness program to students. This year, the district has expanded the Sources of Strength program at Garrison Middle School, Pioneer Middle School, Walla Walla High School and Lincoln High School. The program promotes seeking help and developing coping strategies.

Suicide continues to be the second leading cause of death for children and adolescents. The district said rates of ideation, hospitalization and deaths by suicide remain alarming.

Walla Walla Public Schools will be teaching students age-appropriate lessons in the difference between healthy and unhealthy communication, healthy coping skills, how to help a friend, and when to seek a trusted adult for support.

Anyone needing support is encouraged to contact the local crisis hotline at 509-524-2999 or the National LifeLine at 800-273-8255 or text HOME to 741741. Staff and students can also reach out to a school counselor for additional support and resources.
