WALLA WALLA – Walla Walla Public Schools has received $14 million in federal recovery dollars. The school board has approved the district’s Academic and Student Well-Being Recovery Plan, which would see $4 million dedicated to that in the coming school year.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction provided guidance and both the directors and administrators did a deep dive into how to best use the funding during the coming three-year window.

“We are prioritizing millions of federal pandemic relieve dollars to support academic acceleration and social/emotional support,” Superintendent Wade Smith said. “Our Summer Sol program has more than 1,000 kids already signed up. We’re hiring 20 teachers to reduce class size, eight new school counselors, and bringing in additional home visitors and intervention specialists to make positive connections with our students.”

The plan includes programs to help recover missed learning opportunities, meet social and emotional needs, engage students, support students who qualify for special services, and leverage community partnerships.
