WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Police Department is applying for a $118,000 federal grant to fund an in-house child advocate for one year, starting January 1, 2023.

The grant is to support efforts to develop and strengthen services in response to sexual assault crimes against children ages 11 and older.

Capt. Eric Knudson made a presentation at Wednesday night’s city council meeting and said the department was just notified of the grant’s existence on Monday.

“For the grant application, it’s a very quick turnaround,” he explained. “We have to have it submitted no later than Nov. 16 by 5 p.m.”

The grant requires 25 percent matching funds from the department. Knudson said there is the possibility of additional funding after the one year. Consent was given by the Walla Walla City Council Wednesday allowing WWPD to apply for the grant.
