WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Police Department said Friday one of their officers was injured Thursday night attempting to arrest a man wanted on a warrant. It happened at 8:41 p.m. on the 1000 block of West Chestnut Street when officers contacted Stephen Cleveland, 24, of Walla Walla.

Upon contact with Cleveland, he attempted to go into a nearby residence despite commands by the officer. A struggle occurred at the doorway and Cleveland slipped out of a large jacket he was wearing and took off running.

During the foot pursuit, Cleveland threw a bicycle at the officer, causing the officer to trip and sustain minor injuries to his leg. The officer was able to get back on his feet and start running again after Cleveland near 14th Street and the railroad tracks. Additional officers started to arrive in the area when the officer caught Cleveland and took him to the ground. With the help of additional units, Cleveland was taken into custody.

Cleveland was booked into the Walla Walla County Jail on charges of active warrant for his arrest and third-degree assault on a police officer.

According to the WWPD, Cleveland was out of jail on pre-trial release for a case in 2019 and violated his conditions which triggered the warrant for his arrest.
