WALLA WALLA – The defense attorney for a Walla Walla woman charged with unlawful imprisonment of a child has filed for a competency evaluation in Walla Walla County Superior Court.

Carmen Gwen Ledezma, 48, was arrested Aug. 23 after attempting to kidnap a two-year-old child. The victim and their 13-year-old sibling were in an apartment complex playground when Ledezma allegedly approached, picked up the 2-year-old child and walked towards her apartment.

The older sibling called their mother who quickly came outside, confronted Ledezma and took her child back. Ledezma told police she took the child because the mother and older sibling were abusing it.

Investigators report they found no indication of that. WWPD also reports a history of mental-health-related calls regarding Ledezma.
