WALLA WALLA – Due to the rising numbers of avian influenza cases across Washington state, the Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days will offer an alternative to this year’s traditional live poultry show by staging a virtual show.
“This was a difficult decision and one we recognize will be disappointing to our many poultry exhibitors,” Fair Manager Greg Lybeck said. “Every effort is being made to make this year’s poultry show a fun and educational experience. We hope everyone understands the need to always put safety first.”
Lybeck said the decision is in line with the Washington State Veterinarian’s recommendation which is to suspend exhibitions, fairs, and poultry sales until 30 days after the last bird flu detection to prevent further infection and spread. The Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days joins the Grant County Fair in Moses Lake and the Central Washington State Fair in Yakima by suspending a live poultry show this year.
Poultry exhibitors at this year’s fair in Walla Walla will be able to exhibit their animals using photos, posters, and decorated cages. Youth exhibitors will use a toy chicken for the showmanship contest. Photos of the exhibitor’s poultry will be judged by the photographs submitted.
