WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla City Council meets today (Monday) at 4 p.m. for a workshop to discuss its 2022 legislative priorities. No action will be taken. The proposed list mentions the city supports transportation funding to install a roundabout at the intersection of State Route 125 and Myra Road, to provide for the extension of Myra Road south to Taumarson Road.
The council also supports funding U.S. Highway 12 Phase 8, which completes the segment between Wallula and Nine Mile Hill, as well as construction of a diamond interchange at U.S. Highway 12 and Clinton Street/Lower Waitsburg Road. Both are seen as improving safety by city staff.
Other legislative priorities include pursuing additional resources and policies to increase affordable housing and reduce homelessness; amending the Transportation Benefit District provisions to eliminate the ten-year limitation on the voter approved two tenths of one percent sales tax option; supporting funding for the state’s Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Forest Service wildland fire fighting capacity and fire prevention in Eastern Washington, specifically the Mill Creek watershed, the city of Walla Walla’s primary water source; and support funding broadband infrastructure.
The council will also discuss modifying the two hour parking zones in the downtown corridor. As a result of the city’s newly acquired parking enforcement technology, the parking enforcement officer now has the ability to enforce parking regulations beyond the downtown corridor between Second Avenue to Palouse Street. The city is now able to consistently enforce two-hour parking to Sixth Avenue.
As of result of this increased coverage, the city has received several complaints from various Walla Walla County offices and business owners in this vicinity. Parking enforcement around the courthouse has resulted in numerous parking warnings and a few tickets being issued to citizens serving on jury duty and county employees. City staff has concluded that demand for parking from Third Avenue to Sixth Avenue is very low and the two-hour parking limitation in this area is unwarranted.
This meeting will be streamed on the city’s website or via Zoom. The ID number is 836 2481 9743.
