WSP won’t investigate sheriff

PROSSER – The Washington State Patrol has turned down a request from the Benton County Board of Commissioners that it investigates whether Benton County Sheriff Jerry Hatcher broke the law when he stockpiled more than 14,000 rounds of ammunition at his home in Kennewick over a period of several years.

WSP Chief John R. Batiste has declined to mount an investigation, saying it is not in the state’s jurisdiction. Batiste feels it should be investigated by the Kennewick Police Department, where Hatcher has his home.

Hatcher is also the subject of a recall effort and a state audit. In addition, his wife has filed for divorce, citing domestic violence.

Hatcher’s attorney has alleged that Monica Hatcher was pressured by Benton County officials to report what he called a “false” allegation against her.
