FRANKLIN COUNTY – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has reduced the speed limit from 70 to 65 miles per hour in key areas along the US 395 corridor north of Pasco. The change went into effect late last week after new signs were installed.

The speed limit reduction on US 395 is between Foster Wells Road (milepost 25.4) and Eltopia (milepost 37.67).

WSDOT defends the recent speed limit reduction on US 395, stating the lower speed limits are part of an ongoing effort to curb collisions along the busy corridor. The agency noted the change followed a formal speed study requested earlier this year by Franklin County commissioners and other local elected officials.

“Safety remains our top priority,” WSDOT South Central Region Communications Manager Meagan Lott said in a statement, noting that speed limits are determined by engineering standards, roadway design, and crash history.

Lott explains that the speed reduction aims to increase reaction times near high-traffic intersections and businesses. To support the change, WSDOT has implemented several measures:

  • Enhanced Signage: New warning signs alert drivers to merging traffic from side streets.
  • Driver Education: A partnership with the Washington State Patrol and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission will focus on the proper use of acceleration and deceleration lanes.
  • Infrastructure Review: The agency is monitoring the impact of a $15 million intersection project completed in 2020.

While no further projects are currently funded, Lott said WSDOT is evaluating future options including roundabouts, frontage roads, or additional speed adjustments should state funding become available.
