COLLEGE PLACE – College Avenue will remain closed between Lamperti Lane/Mojonnier Road and Southeast Cedar Bend Drive until at least the end of November. This is due to a trench dug for stormwater work that has repeatedly caved in. Testing shows that section of roadway had inappropriate compaction from when it was originally built by the state in the 1960s.

“What we’re going to have to do for this portion is remove about the top three feet of earth here and have to compact it,” City Administrator Mike Rizzitiello said.

The city will put in new fill to achieve proper compaction to stop erosion, then resurface that portion of roadway. Rizzitiello said the city has a USDA grant to help pay for this additional work.College Avenue has been paved and striped from the south end of the project up to the northern-most entrance of College Place High School and John Sager Middle School, which is just south of the start of the stormwater improvements.

Traffic is currently being routed in and out of the two schools south via Highway 125.
