WALLA WALLA – Motorists should prepare for delays at a major Walla Walla intersection this week as crews begin geotechnical exploration for a future highway interchange.
Starting today (Monday), the work at the intersection of U.S. Route 12 and Clinton Street is scheduled to run daily through Friday, with operations active between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. The project will necessitate short-term closures at Clinton Street and Lower Waitsburg Road.
City Engineer Neal Chavre said the geotechnical work is part of the design for a full interchange. The proposed plans include a bridge overcrossing U.S. 12, along with new entrance and exit ramps to improve traffic flow and safety.
Chavre said the Port of Walla Walla is spearheading the project, backed by a $6 million federal award dedicated to design and right-of-way acquisition. While the city of Walla Walla is assisting with project management, a timeline for groundbreaking remains uncertain. Port officials are still seeking the additional funding required to move the project into the construction phase.
Authorities advise drivers to seek alternate routes if possible and to exercise extreme caution when traveling through the work zone.
The city is currently taking public input through April 12 on the project at https://www.gowallawalla.us/current-projects/us12-clinton
