Woman arrested for role in strong-armed robbery

HERMISTON – The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a woman alleged to have played a part in a robbery and assault that occurred last month. Rebecca Ann Mayes, 29, was arrested early Sunday morning at Space Age in Hermiston.

She is charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree assault in the attack and robbery of a man the night of Jan. 22 on Joy Lane in Hermiston. The victim told law enforcement he was attacked by more than one person who punched and kicked him multiple times. The two then stole the victim’s backpack, which contained cash, tools, and other items.

UCSO said that Mayes was paired with Kelly Ray Chapman, 39, during that assault Chapman was arrested by UCSO on Jan. 31 after he was found hiding in the attic of a home on West Hermiston Avenue. He is in Umatilla County Jail charged with multiple crimes including the crimes Mayes is charged with committing, crimes associated with the attempt to arrest him, and outstanding warrants.

Chapman’s bail is set by the court at $1,110,000. Preliminary bail for Mayes is at $500,000.
