LA GRANDE – Thursday shortly after noon, the La Grande Police Department responded to Candy Cane Park for a disturbance. After officers arrived, Bree Delepierre 27, was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Menacing. A citizen said he was threatened by Delepierre with a hatchet. According to police department officials, she was yelling and acting strangely and appeared that Delepierre was suffering from a mental health disorder.

(A statement from the victim)

I was walking down 13th Street when a lady came out and asked me for food. I told her I didn’t have any for her. She then started to use profanity and tell me she would kill me. I laughed it off at first and went and sat down to eat my lunch in the park field next to 13th St. Just a couple feet of the sidewalk in the shaded area open my sandwich to hear yelling again and so I looked up and she was coming my way I was like whatever just a crazy lady she then came into view where I then saw the hatchet in her right and walking straight for me. I stayed there when she got within about 5 yards from me 15ft. I decided it was time to get up and run. As I got up her speed increased in my direction I decided it was time to run when I look up 3 construction workers who were watching as she charged toward me with a hatchet. Not running but fast pace walk. I told her if she preceded any closer I would use physical force to defend myself. She still proceeded towards me at that point I called 911 and shortly after the La Grande Police Department and the Union County Sheriff’s showed up, the first officer on duty tried to detain her but she refused at that point. She was taken to the ground with great force as an officer came up from behind to help, then 3rd officer showed up with a less than a lethal shotgun.
