BAKER COUNTY — (Information from Wallowa Whitman National Forest) The Whitman Ranger District will be hosting an Open House April 18 from 5pm to 7pm at the Powder River Rural Fire Department, Mosquito Flats at 39744 Sumpter Valley Hwy., Baker City, OR 97814 to discuss the upcoming Huckleberry Defensible Fuel Profile Zone Project.
This proposal includes a combination of commercial harvest, noncommercial thinning, and prescribed burning to improve forest health and create defensible space along major system roads and areas of Wildland Urban Interface.
The public is encouraged to attend and discuss with Forest Service specialists their concerns for the project.

The Forest Service also plans a major wildfire mitigation project this summer between Halfway and Pine Valley, in an area called the West Wall.
