WALLA WALLA – What began as a stop for a minor traffic violation ended in more serious charges over the weekend, thanks to the sharp nose of K9 Officer Watt. The officer felt the driver was more nervous than he should be.
Responding officers discovered that the driver did not have a valid license and provided a false name. Then, K9 Watts was called to the scene to check the vehicle for drug odor. Watts gave a positive alert, and the vehicle was seized.
A warrant was issued, and officers located an unspecified amount of methamphetamine along with forged money documents in the vehicle. In addition the wallets of the driver and a passenger were located. The wallets gave the police the identities of both individuals.
The driver was identified as David McKenna, 44, who was also wanted on an arrest warrant out of Arkansas. The passenger was allowed to walk away from the traffic stop. Finding the wallets allowed them to identify her as the owner of the vehicle.
McKenna was taken to Walla Walla County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance, use of drug paraphernalia, forgery, possession of stolen property in the second degree, two counts of unlawful possession of others’ identification, and providing false statements to a law enforcement officer in addition to the Arkansas warrant.
