NORTH POWDER – (Information from the City of North Powder) The City of North Powder recently gave several updates on the ongoing wastewater project and the city’s garbage services. The city council has officially voted to award the wastewater improvement project’s construction contract to Saunders Company. Based out of Newberg, the company submitted the lowest project bid at $2,248,888 and were awarded the contract for a base bid of $1,814,478. The city stated that any funds left over at the project’s conclusion may be added back to the bid price.
In terms of funding, the city will be using an approximately 2-million-dollar CDBG grant for the primary construction stage and a recently approved low interest loan of up to $390,000. Construction is expected to begin no later than the end of March once the final contract has been approved. Pre-construction meetings are planned prior to groundbreaking.
Moving from wastewater to solid waste, the city officially approved a rate increase for Union Sanitation garbage pickup. This increase went into effect February 1 and will range from an additional $1.80 per month to $2.95 per month. The specific prices per garbage can size following the increase are:
North Powder sighted an increase of 7.1% in disposal prices at the Baker landfill, which has trickled down through county level waste disposal, as the reason for the increase. North Powder would also like to remind residents to put their trash in a bag before disposing of it in a roll cart.
