Washington man arrested in North Powder following report of erratic axe swinging

NORTH POWDER — A report of erratic axe swinging led to the arrest of a Kennewick Washington man and the discovery of a stolen vehicle in North Powder on Sunday afternoon. Oregon State Police initially responded to a report of a male swinging an axe around and acting erratically near the junction of Highway 237 and the I-84 on-off ramp in North Powder at around 3:08 p.m. on February 8. 

An investigation by police led to the odd discovery of a man armed with sticks, a vehicle stolen out of Washington, along with 2 grams of suspected methamphetamine. A full summary of the arrest, as provided by OSP in a recent press log, is as follows:

“Troopers responded to a male acting erratic and swinging what was reported to be an axe around. Troopers contacted an adult male who was walking around with sticks after driving to that location. The male presented with multiple indicators of impairment and consented to SFST’s performing poorly. The vehicle was also found to be stolen out of Washington State. The male was taken into custody for unlawful use of a vehicle and DUII. A search of the vehicle yielded over 2 grams of suspected Methamphetamine. The male was lodged at the Union County Jail for the above charges along with PCS Methamphetamine (A-Misd). Driver’s BAC was 0.00 and urine was obtained under consent.”

The suspect and driver of the stolen vehicle was identified as 27-year-old Hayden Patrick Van Horn of Kennewick Washington. He was charged with DUII-Intoxicants, Unauthorized Use of Vehicle, and Possession of Methamphetamine – 2g to < 10g.
