Washington man arrested for driving the wrong way on I-84 near Baker City

BAKER CITY – On the evening of Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Oregon State Police (OSP) responded to multiple 911 reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way on I-84 near Baker City. The response initially occurred at around 8:36 p.m., near milepost 304. A full summary of the response and arrest, as provided by OSP in a recent press log, is as follows:
“OSP Troopers responded to a reported wrong way driver on 1-84 starting at mile post 304. Numerous callers to 911 reported a dark colored dodge was speeding west in the eastbound lanes of travel. Troopers located the vehicle crashed in the grass center median near mile post 291. The lone occupant/driver was located on foot near the scene and was subsequently taken into custody for DUII, Reckless Driving, Recklessly Endangering, and PCS Methamphetime.
The driver was evaluated by medics but refused transport, he was then transported to the ER by Troopers where he was cited in lieu of custody. The Dodge was impounded and towed by Baker Valley Towing. “
The driver was identified as 57 Matthew Ronald Baker of Castle Rock Washington. No other injuries or damages were reported.
