OLYMPIA – House Democrats approved a bill Monday that would prohibit police officers from wearing face coverings while interacting with the public, sending the measure to the governor’s desk despite fierce Republican opposition.

Senate Bill 5855 passed the House in a 56-37 party-line vote. Proponents argue the ban increases transparency and community trust, but critics warn the mandate jeopardizes officer safety.

“This bill is imprecise and structurally flawed,” said Rep. Jim Walsh (R-Aberdeen) adding that the legislation creates a “plaintiff attorney’s buffet” by allowing private legal action against departments.

Rep. Brian Burnett (R-Wenatchee), a former sheriff, argued that face coverings protect officers from retaliation and harassment that can follow them home to their families. Burnett noted that lawmakers should have collaborated with law enforcement leaders rather than imposing a statewide mandate.

The bill now moves to the governor for final consideration.
