OLYMPIA – Washington Sen. Judy Warnick (R-Moses Lake) is asking Gov. Jay Inslee to consider walking back restrictions on fitness centers and youth sports. Warnick was joined by several Republican colleagues in sending a letter asking for the restrictions to be loosened based on a better understanding of the COVID-19 virus.
The letter points out that the restrictions hurt numerous small businesses operating in the fitness industry, and have an adverse health implications for both young and old citizens.
According to Washington’s statistics, less than one percent of confirmed cases have originated in the fitness sector.
“I believe we can keep our communities safe from the risks posted by COVID while encouraging healthy and active lifestyles,” Warnick wrote in a prepared statement. “I think we need to be nimble and focused on what data is telling us. Closing down activities that are good for people’s physical and emotional wellbeing doesn’t align with the facts.”
