Wallowa Whitman National reminds visitors of anticipated Memorial Day traffic increase

BAKER CITY – (Release from the U.S. Forest Service) On Memorial Day, we remember those service members that have paid the ultimate sacrifice and their families. Many people chose to go out to our forest to seek connection or solitude and remember in their own way.

As you recognize Memorial Day weekend outdoors with family, friends, loved ones, and colleagues. It is a weekend where millions of other Americans venture to our Forests and Grasslands too.

So, keep in mind, with our trails, campsites, picnic areas, lakes, and rivers opening, we expect a large spike in visitors. Our roads will have heavy traffic and many of our popular sites may be overcrowded.

We ask for everyone to be patient and courteous to our fellow guests, that everyone stays safe out there in the Forest, we continue to safeguard the health of our public lands, and to plan out your trip before you leave your home.

Here are some tips on how you can make it safer for you and your family:

  • Explore locally — make use of local parks, trails and public lands
  • Play it safe — slow down and choose lower-risk activities
  • Pack out what you pack in — please remove trash and waste safely and appropriately.
