Wallowa-Whitman BAER Team Completes Post-Fire Assessments

JOSEPH โ (Release from the U.S. Forest Service) The US Forest Service Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has completed their emergency assessments of the Double Creek, Nebo, Sturgill, Jones and Goat Mountain fires. The main objectives of the teamโs assessment are to evaluate burned area conditions and identify critical values at risk and damages due to recent wildfires. Once burned area conditions and risks to critical values are identified, mitigation actions (treatments) to minimize future risk and long-term fire recovery actions are proposed for funding.
BAER team specialists have conducted their analyses and provided a synopsis of their findings, which will be summarized in a request to the Pacific Northwest Regional Office for emergency funding.
Forest Service officials are working closely with local and state agencies and affected stakeholders on immediate and longer-term recovery needs. Suppression damage repair and other mitigation work has been occurring in many areas and BAER recommended actions and long-term fire recovery activities will begin as soon as practical.
Current Fire statuses as of Tuesday, October 25, 2022:
