Wallowa Memorial Hospital warns community of phone scams and “spoofing” calls

ENTERPRISE – (Release from Wallowa Memorial Hospital) Wallowa Memorial Hospital and Medical Clinics (WMH) has been made aware of a series of fraudulent phone calls—commonly known as “spoofing”—where individuals are posing as hospital representatives to obtain sensitive personal information from members of our community.

We want to assure our patients that their privacy and security are our top priorities. Please be advised of the following:

  • We will NEVER ask for your Social Security Number or full credit card details over the phone in an unsolicited call. A safe practice is to NEVER give your credit card details over the phone, when you have not initiated the call.
  • Verify the Caller: Scammers often use technology to make “Wallowa Memorial Hospital” or a familiar local number appear on your caller ID. If you receive a suspicious call, please hang up immediately.
  • Call Us Back Directly: If you are unsure if a call is legitimate, do not provide any information. Instead, hang up and call our risk manager at 541-426-5425 to verify the request.
  • Protect Your Information: Never share your Medicare number, insurance ID, or financial passwords with anyone who calls you unexpectedly, even if they claim to be from a “billing department” or “patient services.”

“The trust of our patients is the foundation of the care we provide,” said Wallowa Memorial Hospital leadership. “We are working closely with local authorities to monitor this situation and urge our neighbors to remain vigilant against these predatory tactics.”

If you believe you have shared personal information with a scammer, we recommend contacting your financial institutions and monitoring your credit report. You may also report the incident to the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office.
