Wallowa high school highlights college credit opportunities

WALLOWA — Wallowa high school students can explore college-level coursework and career pathways before they graduate. Superintendent Rollie Marshal said the school offers 11 advanced courses, including calculus and college-level writing courses such as Writing 115 and Writing 122.

The courses give students a chance to take on more challenging work while still in high school. Marshal described the writing courses as ones students may encounter as prerequisites at Oregon colleges. The school also offers college credit through Early College Initiative. Marshal explained that the program provides another route to college credit, distinct from the AP course model.

Those opportunities are reaching a substantial share of students. Marshal said 45% of high school students took college credits last year. He added that nearly all juniors and seniors successfully completed at least one college credit.

The school’s career pathways extend beyond college coursework. Marshal highlighted an Oregon teacher pathway designed to introduce students to the education profession and support a “grow your own” approach. He also mentioned options connected to medical careers, including medical assisting, radiology and nursing.

Marshal also pointed to a 92% graduation rate, which he described as a 19% increase since 2022. Together, the graduation and course figures reflect the range of ways the school is working to support students’ next steps.
