ENTERPRISE – A Joint venture of the Wallowa County Sports Center between the City of Enterprise, and the Wallowa County Athletic Network (WCAN) is nearing completion. WCAN is a registered non-profit with the mission of building community through sports and physical activity.
The project started in 2018 as a grassroots effort to renovate the Jensen Field complex which is home to the majority of public athletic fields in Wallowa County. At the heart of the project is a new indoor athletic center which will host a multitude of activities for the people of Wallowa County, including four batting cages, an indoor practice field, a soccer field, and a billiards room. The building will also be available to walk indoors and out of the elements, host aerobics and yoga classes.
The total cost of the project is estimated at nearly $500,000. In 2019, the City of Enterprise was awarded a grant from the State of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) to build the 120’ x 77’ foot indoor athletic center. The OPRD grant was for $250,000.00 with a requirement to match those funds either by in kind or cash donation in the amount of $125,000.00. The City of Enterprise Public Works Department provided over $30,000 of donated services and WCAN has received cash donations of $130,000.
In addition, community members have provided $60,000 of donated services and labor to this point. We are close to reaching our goal and are still seeking donations to fully furnish the sports center with equipment.
According to the City of Enterprise, the project is estimated to be completed in March or April of 2021.
