WALLOWA COUNTY – (Release from Wallowa County Search and Rescue) On November 17, 2024, at approx. 9:00 am WCSAR received a call of a family stranded in their pickup in the snow near Harl Butte and Nesbitt Butte.

While OSP troopers travelled to the area to check on conditions, SAR winter team members prepared to deploy with snowmobiles. Three SAR members travelled to the site of the truck and made contact with the family, transporting them by snowmobile to Salt Creek Summit where troopers gave them a ride back to town.

While the team was picking up the first party a call came in of a second group also stuck in the snow in the vicinity of the first call. After dropping the family off at SCS, the SAR team went back out and picked up the two individuals at the second location and brought them back to town.

Thanks to all involved including WCSO Dispatch, OSP, and SAR winter team responders.

Winter travel can be risky with our changing weather conditions and WCSAR does not always have resources available to transport stranded subjects on a short time frame. We encourage all backcountry traffic to carry warm clothes, water and food, any medications, phone and charger or other communications device, and extra fuel in case you may be stranded all night. And please stay with your vehicle.
