JOSEPH, OR – The staff of the Wallowa County Rails for Trails is VERY excited to announce that the Joseph Branch Trail Consortium has just received two grants totaling more than $272,000 that will establish the first trailhead, the first ADA-compliant trail section, and fund development of a refinement plan for another section!
An Oregon State Parks grant will fund construction of the project’s very first trailhead, which will also serve as a City pocket park in downtown Elgin. This will include an EV/e-Bike charging station, ADA-compliant picnic tables/benches, interpretive signage, water fountain, and more. This grant will also fund construction of the inaugural section of trail — an ADA-compliant path starting from the trailhead and running out of town along the Grande Ronde River.
Another grant from the Oregon Dept. of Transportation will fund detailed research, outreach, and planning for the 13-mile trail section between Elgin and Lookingglass.
These two grants are BIG wins for our organization, and we’re very excited to see the first parts of this trail finally falling into place!
