WALLA WALLA – Regional planners have launched a comprehensive update to the Walla Walla Valley’s specialized transportation strategy, an initiative aimed at improving transit access for veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities.
The Walla Walla Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) announced Monday that it has begun updating its Coordinated Public Transit–Human Services Transportation Plan. The document serves as a blueprint for identifying service gaps and securing the state and federal funding necessary to maintain and expand local transit options.
The planning area encompasses Walla Walla, College Place, Prescott, and Waitsburg, as well as portions of Umatilla and Walla Walla counties.
“The plan guides regional coordination efforts and helps local agencies compete for federal and state funding to expand and improve public transportation services,” the MPO said in a statement.
To gather community feedback, the MPO is hosting public engagement events on March 4. Planners will be at the Valley Transit Center, 108 West Main Street in Walla Walla from 9-10:15 a.m., followed by a public open house at the Walla Walla Public Library, 238 East Alder Street from 1:30-4 p.m.
Officials are specifically seeking input from low-income individuals, caregivers, and human-service organizations to map current resources and identify barriers to mobility.
Residents who cannot attend the in-person sessions may participate through a virtual open house and survey available on the MPO’s website at https://arcg.is/1mrbzf4. The final updated plan will highlight opportunities to improve coordination between transit providers and human-service agencies across the bi-state region.
