WALLA WALLA – The city of Walla Walla is accepting applications to fill an at-large vacancy on the city council following the resignation of Councilmember Tom Scribner.

The city council voted Wednesday, Jan. 14 to use a formal application process to fill Position No. 6. Interested residents have until 4 p.m. on Feb. 6 to submit their materials to the city clerk.

Under Washington state law, the council must fill the vacancy within 90 days of the resignation, a window that closes March 31. The appointed member will serve until the results of the November 2027 general election are certified, when Position No. 6 is up for election.

To be eligible, applicants must be registered voters and have lived within the Walla Walla city limits continuously for at least one year. The role requires a significant time commitment, including attendance at a minimum of four evening meetings per month and service as a liaison to various city boards and commissions.

Applications are available on the city’s website at wallawallawa.gov/CouncilApplications. Submissions can be completed online, emailed as a PDF, or delivered in person or by mail to City Hall at 15 N. 3rd Ave.

The council plans to review applications during its Feb. 11 meeting. Public interviews are tentatively scheduled for a work session on Feb. 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. While the council may discuss candidate qualifications in a private executive session, the final selection must be made by a majority vote during an open public meeting.
