WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla Public Schools officials met Wednesday with the Hispanic Community Leaders Focus Group to review the district’s immigration enforcement policies and reinforce its commitment to student safety.
Superintendent Ben Gauyan and district leaders were joined by representatives from the Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition to discuss resources available to families. The meeting focused on the district’s “Immigration Enforcement in Schools” webpage, which provides frequently asked questions and guidance to ensure a welcoming environment for all students.
Under Washington state law, the district is prohibited from inquiring about the citizenship or immigration status of students, parents, or guardians. District policy further bans staff from participating in or aiding immigration enforcement actions against students, families, or volunteers on or near campus.
Additionally, the district does not grant permission for any individual to engage in immigration enforcement on school grounds or in the immediate vicinity.
The focus group was established to strengthen communication between the district and the Hispanic community, ensuring local policies reflect the needs of all families. The group meets every other month to discuss student success and community partnerships.
The Hispanic Community Leaders Focus Group is scheduled to reconvene on April 22. Detailed information regarding these policies can be found on the district’s website at wwps.org.
