WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Police Department is investigating a homicide after a 49-year-old man was found dead early this morning (Wednesday) near the intersection of North Sixth Avenue and West Elm Street. On Thursday, WWPD identified the victim as Arturo Serrato Martinez.
Officers responded to a 911 call at 2:25 a.m. Wednesday regarding an unconscious man lying near a vehicle. Upon arrival, police discovered Martinez suffering from a fatal wound. Despite attempts at life-saving measures, Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives processed the scene for evidence. While the case is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said no motive has been identified.
An autopsy was completed and the cause of death has been confirmed as a single gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation remains active. Detectives are asking residents and business owners within a three block radius of North Sixth Avenue and West Elm Street to review security cameras showing unfamiliar people or vehicles between 1 to 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
