WALLA WALLA – City officials are moving to pivot a planned renovation and expansion of the Walla Walla Public Library after the project’s sole construction bid arrived more than $1 million over budget.
At the April 8 Walla Walla City Council meeting, staff members are expected to recommend that the council reject the bid. The decision comes after the proposal significantly exceeded the city’s projected construction costs.
In a statement, City Manager Elizabeth Chamberlain emphasized that while the current bid was rejected, the project remains a “top priority” for the city. Project teams are currently reviewing design specifications to revise the scope of work and lower costs; a move officials say reflects a commitment to fiscal stewardship.
“The revised scope of work will still maintain the goal of delivering a renovated library that will serve the current and future needs of the community,” Chamberlain said, specifically noting the need for updated meeting spaces and active areas for children’s programming.
City officials noted that receiving a single high bid is not unprecedented. The city took a similar path with the Heritage Square construction project, which was successfully re-bid after a redesign brought that project back within its budget.
Due to the delay, the library will no longer close on April 4 as originally scheduled. Instead, the facility will remain open through spring break, offering a full week of planned activities for local families.
