Walla Walla July 4th pipe bomb explosion damages neighborhood

WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Police Department is investigating an apparent pipe bomb explosion that damaged multiple buildings and vehicles in a residential neighborhood on the Fourth of July.
Officers responded to the intersection of J Street and Wellington Avenue at 7:50 p.m. Saturday after a resident reported gunfire. Upon arrival, investigators determined the damage was actually caused by flying shrapnel from an explosive device.
No injuries were reported in the blast, according to the Walla Walla Police Department.
Detectives processed the scene and recovered numerous pieces of evidence from the ground, nearby homes, and vehicles. Authorities noted that possessing an explosive device with unlawful intent is a Class A felony in Washington, carrying a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
The investigation remains active.
