WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Fire Department responded to two separate fires Thursday afternoon. Both fires are considered suspicious and are currently under investigation.

The first fire was a grass fire near North Eighth Avenue and West Elm Street near the Border Tavern.

Crews were dispatched to that fire at 3:32 p.m. and when they arrived, they found a slow-moving brush fire about 70 yards in length. Firefighters worked to control the fire along the streets and keep it from spreading to U.S. 12.

Firefighters were dispatched at 3:44 p.m. to the second fire involving a mattress on fire near a garage around West Chestnut Street and South 11th Avenue.

When firefighters arrived, they found multiple pieces of debris burning and the fire spread to a fence along an alleyway off 11th Avenue.

No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported from either fire.
