WASHINGTON, D.C. – Walla Walla County has been awarded at $108.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to finish the last 10-mile section of U.S. 12 from Wallula to Nine Mile Hill. This funding will replace the current two-lane undivided highway with a modern four-lane divided highway.
Walla Walla County, Port of Walla Walla, and Washington State Department of Transportation co-applied for the grant, which is part of a federal program to improve rural transportation. The grant is part of the $281 million needed to complete Phase 8.
“This is a big boost of additional federal funds needed for the construction phase but will require a large match from the project proponents,” WSDOT official Scott Klepach said.
WSDOT will continue with design and right-of-way phases for a possible contract advertisement in spring 2027 and will work with partners to close the funding.
