WALLA WALLA COUNTY – Walla Walla County Department of Community Health Environmental Health Division Manager Rick Dawson is encouraging residents to test their homes for radon, which is a colorless and odorless gas that comes from decaying minerals. The presence of radon varies based on soil mineral content in different areas of the country, including Washington and Oregon.

Dawson explains that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, making it a serious concern as it cannot be detected without testing and is mostly found indoors, particularly in homes.

To reduce radon levels, increasing ventilation is the most common method. Dawson said newer homes may have systems like whole-house fans that improve air circulation. Other strategies include sealing openings, using vapor barriers, and fixing cracks in foundations to prevent radon from entering.

Dawson highly recommends testing for radon.

“Generally, you can get home test kits from pretty much any hardware store, or you can search online for radon test kits, and you can have them sent do your home,” he adds. Elevated levels may require professional testing after initial home screenings.
