WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg City Council has cleared the way for a new seasonal recreation space, approving the $10,000 purchase of portable skate ramps and equipment to transform the local ice rink during the warmer months.

City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe explains the money came from a dedicated fund the city uses to collect sales tax on the sale of property for municipal capital improvements.

Under the approved plan, the city’s ice rink will transition into a skatepark from spring through fall. The modular equipment, purchased from Huntington Beach, California-based company Freshpark, is designed to be easily stored when the facility reverts to synthetic ice use in the winter.

The portable skatepark setup offers long-term flexibility. Should the city of Waitsburg decide to install permanent outdoor skate ramps in the future, the Freshpark equipment can be modified and integrated into a fixed installation.

Hinchliffe reports that the ice rink was pulled up last week and that the skate park kit arrived Monday.

“Hoping to find time to get it constructed before spring break next week,” Hinchliffe adds.

The city cleaned out an adjacent building that is currently being used to store the ice rink and skate park equipment during the seasons they are not in use.
