WALLA WALLA – A College Place man who appealed his convictions and sentence for first degree murder and second-degree assault filed a petition this week for review by the state Supreme Court.

In May 2019, Robert Gage Sregzinski, 24, plead guilty to the April 2016 murder of Gabriel Ledezma Rodriguez, 34, over a drug debt.  The victim’s body was discarded in a ravine near Milton-Freewater.

In August 2019, Sregzinski was sentenced to more than 23 years in prison.  He was transferred back to Oregon where he committed crimes shortly after killing Rodriguez.  Once he is released from Oregon, which would be April 2026 at the earliest, he will be sent back to Washington to serve his sentence.

Shortly after being sentenced in Walla Walla County Superior Court, Sregzinski requested the Washington State Court of Appeals review the judgement and sentence in the murder case against him in Washington state.

Last month, the state Court of Appeals made its decision.

“The guilty plea was upheld,” Walla Walla County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Nagle said.

In its opinion filed last month, the state Court of Appeals said Sregzinski’s case is being remanded for resentencing. On Wednesday, a clerk with the Washington State Supreme Court confirmed a case regarding State of Washington v. Robert Gage Sregzinski has been opened and will be heard on October 5.
