OLYMPIA – Gov. Bob Ferguson and the Department of Ecology announced a new statewide initiative Wednesday to secure Washington’s water resources as the state enters a record-breaking fourth consecutive year of drought.

The program, “Washington’s Water Future,” aims to build more resilient and sustainable supplies. Ecology Director Casey Sixkiller said the agency will host regional roundtables with local and Tribal governments, utilities, and environmental groups to assess watershed needs.

“We’re going to examine what’s working, where the gaps are, and what kinds of investments and policy changes will be needed,” Sixkiller said.

Following these community discussions, the Department of Ecology will submit formal policy recommendations to the governor’s office. These proposals are expected to be finalized ahead of the next state legislative session to address the ongoing crisis.
