WALLA WALLA – Walla Walla High School Cadet Major Claire Calvert recently placed in the top half of precision marksmen nationwide at the All-Service JROTC National Championship at Camp Perry near Port Clinton, Ohio. Calvert is the first individual shooter from her school to qualify for the event in approximately two decades.
Representing the Army JROTC Precision Rifle Team, Calvert competed against more than 200 of the nation’s elite marksmen. After entering the two-day match ranked fourth among Army cadets, she posted a strong opening day with scores of 195 in kneeling and 199 in prone. She finished the competition with a combined score of 1150.
“The level of competition here is higher than anything we’ve faced this season,” Wa-Hi Rifle Coach Mark Mebes said.
Calvert’s season continues in early April at the Junior Olympic National Championship in Anniston, Alabama. Additionally, the full Walla Walla rifle team will compete in the Western Regional Championship in Salt Lake City on April 15.
