Volunteer firefighters in Baker County pass key firefighting test

BAKER COUNTY — Ahead of what is expected to be a hot and dry summer ripe for wildfires, a group of volunteer firefighters in Baker County have completed a key certification.

The Baker Rural Fire Protection District says several volunteers in its department and the Greater Bowen Valley Rural Protection District completed their Firefighter I Test.

Firefighter I is a certification level that Oregon grants to those who have completed academic training and certification exams

That means these volunteers are now qualified to work on all fires the departments are called out to. They’ll be fully certified within six months.

“It takes a lot of commitment and hard work to get through the academy,” said Sean Lee, Chief of the Baker Rural Fire Protection District. “They put in a great deal of time and effort to get this done.”
