Virtual meeting is planned on Cougar Creek Fire

UMATILLA NATIONAL FOREST – The Cougar Creek Fire 35 miles southeast of Dayton, Washington, was 35 percent contained at almost 20,700 acres at last report. Fire officials are hosting a virtual community meeting this evening (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. on the Cougar Creek Fire Facebook page. The meeting will also be recorded and posted on that same page.

One home is reported to have been destroyed by the fire with 153 threatened. A total of 409 minor structures are also threatened while three have been destroyed and five have been damaged.

The fire started on July 15 and the estimated containment date is Oct. 1. Inciweb reports closures on the Umatilla National Forest can be found on that website. In Washington evacuation notices are posted on the Asotin County Sheriff’s Office website and the Asotin County Emergency Management Facebook page.

Drone activity is prohibited due to aviation assets trying to fight the fire. Planes and helicopters trying to fight the fire cannot fly if unauthorized drones are present.
