PENDLETON – A salute to all veterans is taking shape in Pendleton. The tribute will feature a 22-foot tower with the symbols of all branches of service laser-etched into it. Johnny Blagg of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Let ’er Buck Post No. 922 said sculptor Mike Clapper of Colorado is about 85 percent finished with his work.

Meanwhile, the VFW and Pendleton Arts Commission received a $15,000 donation that requires matching money. Blagg said they will soon be launching a memorial brick sale.

“You can memorialize a family member, a military veteran, or whatever you want,” Blagg said. “We’re setting the 4-by-8 bricks at $100 and the 8-by-8 bricks at $200.” The memorial tower, named Beacon of the Sentinels, will be located below the viaduct in Eastgate.
