WALLA WALLA – Staff at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla have begun the third phase of World War I veteran headstone work.
Damaged headstones and bases have been removed from the cemetery and disposed of. A contractor will form and pour new bases for 173 replacement headstones.
“The work is being paid for by a $50,000 grant from the Washington Trust of Historic Preservation and their historic cemetery grant program,” Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Director Andy Coleman said.
Coleman said the replacement headstones are provided by the Veterans Administration at no cost to the city.
The project is anticipated to be completed this summer.
