Verifying voter signatures goes high tech

PENDLETON – This November, the Umatilla County Elections Division will be working with a new way to compare voter signatures. Umatilla County Board of Commissioners Chairman John Shafer said they approved the purchase this week.

“The elections division received a grant from the Center for Tech and Civic Life to purchase an automated signature verification system,” he said.

The system costs $46,134. Part of the agreement with Kelly Connect of Kent is the purchase includes an hour of training and installation.

“It is completely covered by the grant,” Shafer said. “That will make things go a lot faster for them on election night.”

The Center for Tech and Civic Life is a nonprofit organization that works to link education officials with technology.
